We realize that online school is very atypical and you want your student to put their best foot forward and turn in high-quality work. As second grade teachers, we would like to ask that you allow your student to turn in work at the level they are at.
We are grading at a second-grade level. That means we do not count off for spelling unless it is a spelling test or they are being asked to directly copy words. Also, we will not count off for grammar or punctuation mistakes, unless we have already directly taught that skill. Your child’s grades will not suffer if they are working at a second-grade level.
How We Grade:
Second Grade is graded on the numerical 1-4 scale instead of the traditional A-F. Please refer to the following when looking at grades:
4- Exceeds Expectations: Work is being done above grade level.
3- Meets Expectations: Work is being done at grade level.
2- Inconsistent: There are inconsistencies in the work being done.
1- Below Expectations: Work is being done below grade level.
While we want and expect their best work, we really want the work they turn in to be their work. Not only does this demonstrate the virtues of honesty and integrity, but it also helps us to be better teachers. Turning in work at their level helps guide the direction we teach. When we can see where a child’s needs are, we can help fill in the gaps. If we see work coming in perfectly corrected, then we may skip over teaching a lesson that your child would actually benefit from. Please partner with us to provide the best learning experience possible for your child.
We thank you for your understanding and patience during this time. We also appreciate your partnership is providing the best education for your scholar. Please reach out to your scholar’s teachers if you have any questions.
